She received her BA in Psychology from the University of Minnesota before moving to Tallahassee FL where she worked as an outpatient case manager for a mental health service provider for three years in rural communities south of the city. After 9 months she was promoted to supervisor of three of their outpatient clinics\, during which the system instituted a telehealth program between the main medical center in Tallahassee and a spoke sites approximately 30 miles away for medication management purposes.\nShe moved back to Minneapolis in 2011 and found a position managing Clinical Video Telehealth at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. During her time in this role she grew the Video Telehealth program by instituting infrastructure\, policy\, staffing and marketing tools.  In 2013 LeeAnn was offered the Facility Telehealth Coordinator role which expanded her purview to include Home Telehealth\, a form of care coordination utilizing remote monitoring devices\, and Store and Forward Telehealth covering Teleretinal Imaging. There are currently telehealth services offered in all service lines\, to include primary subspecialty medicine\, surgery services\, rehab services\, mental health and ancillary services such as nutrition and pharmacy. Expansion to new patient sites to include the MN State Veterans Home\, University of MN campus and directly into patients’ homes has made accessing care easier for busy veterans. LeeAnn is responsible for creating the telehealth strategic mission for the facility\, oversight of telehealth operations at the medical center in these three types of telehealth and national accreditation compliance.\nLeeAnn is passionate about giving patients and providers choices about providing and receiving care. She is currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota in the Masters in Healthcare Administration\, Executive Track. She is interested in Minnesota state telehealth policies and how telehealth technology can help reduce barriers to accessing care in remote areas.\n \nImad Ahmed is Vice President\, Optum Consumer Solutions Group\, Population Health Management –Telemedicine Services.  As Vice President of Telemedicine Services\, Imad Ahmed works to help consumers achieve health goals through effective navigation of the health care system. He leads a team that develops and delivers innovative products that enable people to get healthy\, stay healthy and live with an illness. These solutions also strive to improve the consumer’s overall experience by connecting through multiple channels\, such as online\, mobile\, tablets and social media.\nSince joining UnitedHealth Group in 2001\, Imad has served in leadership roles spanning numerous parts of the company\, within UnitedHealthcare\, OptumInsight (formerly known as Ingenix) and OptumHealth. His focus throughout has been on improving health care quality\, usability and access and ensuring regulatory compliance.\nPrior to his work at UnitedHealth Group\, Imad represented ERISA self-funded health plans\, stop-loss carriers and disability carriers in complex litigation.\nImad holds a bachelor’s degree in political science & Asian studies from St. Olaf College\, a master’s degree in public administration from Hamline University and a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law.\n \nMs. Susan Makela is currently a Manager for Learning & Development within Allina Health. She served as Director of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan’s Telehealth Network and Educational Services at Marquette General Hospital for over 10 years. She has been involved with telemedicine activities since 2000\, serving on the Michigan Telemedicine Policy Committee and Michigan Center for Rural Health advocating for state policy changes including Medicaid reimbursement. \nMs. Makela was responsible for assuring the clinical telemedicine consults provided in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan were reimbursed leading to the growth of the network. She has fostered friendships and working relationships with all 15 hospitals across the region\, and restructured the regional Health Educator Consortium that collaborates on policies and sharing of health education materials. Susan is a board member with Center for Telehealth and e-Health Law in Washington DC and is a member of the American Telemedicine Association and American College of Healthcare Executives.  She has presented on various topics and has contributed to several articles regarding telehealth.\nMs. Makela received her Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University\, her Master’s degree in Public Administration from Northern Michigan University and Fellowship in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is currently pursuing her Masters Art in Organizational Leadership at St. Catherine University in St. Paul MN.  In addition to her formal education\, she has 30 years of experience in healthcare with 15 in management.\n \nDr. Steve R. Ommen is a Professor of Medicine\, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine\, a Consultant in Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine\, and Director of the Cardiomyopathy Clinic\, Mayo Clinic. He is the Medical Director for AskMayoExpert\, Associate Dean of the Center for Connected Care\, and Medical Director\, Connected Care Delivery Platform.Dr. Ommen leads Mayo Clinic’s telemedicine team\, a critical component in Mayo Clinic’s strategy to provide comprehensive care with a seamless patient experience. He oversees the development of products\, services\, and systems that bring health care to patients where they need it.  Additionally\, he is active in advocating for the advancement of connected care through discussions and presentations at the regional\, state\, and national levels so that these advancements in health care delivery can be made available to people and patients more broadly.Dr. Ommen has earned many awards throughout his career including the Outstanding Achievement Award in Clinical Cardiology\, the Mayo Award of Individual Excellence\, the Mayo Award for Team Excellence\, the Excellence in Teaching Recognition for Mayo Clinic College of Medicine\, and the Outstanding Course Director Award from the Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education.Dr. Ommen received his Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University. His undergraduate medical education\, Internal Medicine residency and Cardiovascular Diseases fellowship were all completed at Mayo Clinic\, Rochester\, Minnesota.\n\n\nGlobalization of Healthcare Panel\n Moderator:\nGeoff Kaufmann\, FACHE\, is the Vice President for Patient Services for the American Red Cross Biomedical Services. He has held senior level strategic planning and operational positions with Stillwater Medical Group (CAO)\, Center for Diagnostic Imaging\, Arizant Healthcare\, Park Nicollet Health System\, the University of Minnesota Hospital & Clinic and Hamilton KSA\, a national health care consulting company. Mr. Kaufmann has over 39 years experience in operations\, business development\, strategic planning\, marketing and physician relations. He speaks frequently at national healthcare forums and also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota in the Master’s Program in Health Care Administration\, the University of St. Thomas and the College of St. Scholastica. He is a past president of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development and is active in National Healthcare Associations and corporate boards.  Geoff received his undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College and his Masters from the University of Chicago. Geoff is currently the Regent for the State of Minnesota for the American College of Healthcare Executives. In his spare time he enjoys playing and recording music (rock and roll)\, mountain climbing\, and most seasonal sports.\n\nSpeakers: \nKaren-Dawn (KD) Braden\, BA/PHE is a Senior Management Consultant – Quality and Safety \nMinnesota International Medicine.  KD was born in Niagara Falls\, Ontario and spent her schools years in Ontario\, graduating from Queen’s University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts and Physical and Health Education.  After a period of worldwide travel\, she took the opportunity to live in New Zealand and work in the area of Sexually Transmitted Infections\, HIV and communicable diseases.   She then moved to the United Kingdom where she worked in the area of Sexual health in inner city London. KD has also spent some time in the private sector working in the pharmaceutical industry as a liaison between with the National Health Service in the United Kingdom\, helping hospitals prepare for the impact of oral cancer therapies and targeted breast cancer therapies. \nIn 2001 she returned to her roots in Canada and accepted a position in a small\, remote\, Northern Manitoba community\, managing the local hospital.  Ms. Braden spent several years in South Western Manitoba working as a hospital and nursing home administrator before moving into Risk Management and Quality Improvement.  KD worked in Toronto for the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care as a Risk Management Coordinator\, moving in 2009 to take a position as Director of Quality Improvement and Risk Management for the Yukon Hospital Corporation.   Her portfolio included: risk management\, quality improvement\, infection control\, patient safety\, patient relations\, privacy\, emergency and disaster preparedness and response including pandemic planning. \nIn 2014\, with a desire to expand her services to patients globally\,  KD accepted her current position as Senior Management Consultant – Quality and Safety\, with Minnesota International Medicine. Minnesota International Medicine (MIM) is a Minneapolis/St. Paul\, Minnesota based consortium of health care providers and  facilities\, delivering world-class health care domestically and providing advisory services globally. MIM delivers innovative\, sustainable solutions to health care institutions around the globe\, including newly opened hospitals and health organizations redeveloping their services.  MIM’s Global Advisory Services include: education and training services\, clinical and administrative gap analysis and management\, infection control\, visiting professorship\, new program development\, physician exchange and observerships\, and telemedicine including second opinions by our multispecialty physician groups. \nKD states: “I’ve been very fortunate to live and work in many parts of the globe and learn from being immersed in a rich cultural environment – this guides my practice irrespective of the position I hold”\nKD is a Surveyor for Accreditation Canada working in the national and international market.  Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit independent organization that provides national and international health service organizations with a voluntary external peer review to assess the quality of their services based on standards of excellence.   As part of this work she has spent time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia leading a team of consultants who were assessing Ministry of Health Hospitals readiness to respond to Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus.  Additionally\, she has worked as an Education Consultant for the Risk Management and Safety in Health Services and the Continuous Quality Improvement distance learning courses offered through the Canadian Healthcare Association.   KD enjoys sharing her learning and spoken at teaching sessions and conferences in the area of integrated quality management\, patient safety\, disaster and emergency response\, cultural competency and other areas of quality and safety in health care.\n \nBarry Friedman began his career in 1984 as an ICU Staff Nurse in St Louis Missouri which included caring for post-operative heart transplants.  In 1986 he became an Organ Procurement Coordinator with Mid America Transplant. In 1991 he became a Pediatric Clinical Transplant Coordinator at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and in 1994 became the Administrative Director.  In 2004 he became the Administrative Director for Solid Organ Transplant at Children’s Medical Center\, Dallas and in 2006 until 2012 was the Senior Administrative Director\, Organ Transplantation Adult and Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical Center\, Fairview. Currently he is the Chief of Clinical Global Services for Minnesota International Medicine.\nMr. Friedman has quickly become an active member in the international health care arena.  He has assisted Minnesota International Medicine to become one of the most active international offices in the United States.  He remains very active as Chief of Global Services and has consulted in 7 countries and two continents.\nMr. Friedman has been an active member of the transplant community. He is one of the few transplant professionals that has functioned in all areas of transplantation. He is a member of the American Society of Transplantation\, American Society of Transplant Surgeons\, NATCO\, and UNOS. He is a past President of NATCO.  He has served on various committees’ including the Board of Directors of UNOS. Barry has kept one theme paramount in his career and to be an “advocate for patients and families”. Throughout his career advancement he has ensured that all patients (donors and recipients) were treated fairly and equitable. \nMr. Friedman has mentored many of the currently practicing senior transplant professionals.  He has done this in various modes by having staff visit his centers\, visiting their centers\, or through his work through professional organizations.  Under his leadership at NATCO he was able to develop staff competencies for both organ procurement and clinical coordinators and those competencies are still the current standards of clinical practice.  He resurrected the Transplant President’s council for the transplant organizations which has led to better cooperation among the transplant organizations. Finally he was instrumental in having non physician sessions at the American Transplant Congress.\nMr. Friedman has authored and co-authored several articles.  He has organized and participated in several local and national transplant conferences. He loves family and sports. He has been dedicated and continues to lead the advancement of transplantation for well over three decades. \nMr. Friedman has also been an active member of the United States Air Force Reserves and has served most recently from February 2003 through August 2003 in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom as Director of Operations for Aeromedical Services. He was decorated with an Air Combat Medal in January 2004.  He retired from the United States Air Force Reserves in July of 2006 after 30 years of service as a Major.\n \nLeslie Parran\, is the Senior Director\, Nursing and Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) at University of Minnesota Health\, supporting service line operations\, regulatory\, and strategic planning. Leslie has been in the field of BMT and oncology for 35 years\, holding a master’s in oncology nursing and is certified as a nurse executive\, and advanced oncology nurse\, and a BMT nurse. Leslie also serves as the international liaison for MHealth to Minnesota International Medicine to support international referrals\, strategic planning\, and workflows/processes for the organization. \n \n \nJonathan Torrens-Burton has a joint appointment at Mayo Clinic as an Operations Administrator in the Department of Provider Relations and the Midwest Spine Practice.  In his Provider Relations role\, Jonathan works on the International team\, leading the International Provider Relations function\, including international referrer business development\, relationship management and oversight of Mayo Clinic’s international offices.  Jonathan’s prior roles at Mayo Clinic include with Mayo Medical School and Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development\, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine\, and Project Manager for multi-site Supply Chain systems implementations.  Prior to joining Mayo Clinic\, Jonathan’s work experience included serving as Contracts Officer for a major petrochemical engineering and construction company in the United Kingdom.  Jonathan holds a B.A. from the University of Reading\, United Kingdom\, and an M.A. in Health and Human Services Administration from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

He has held senior level strategic planning and operational positions with Stillwater Medical Group (CAO)\, Center for Diagnostic Imaging\, Arizant Healthcare\, Park Nicollet Health System\, the University of Minnesota Hospital & Clinic and Hamilton KSA\, a national health care consulting company. Mr. Kaufmann has over 39 years of experience in operations\, business development\, strategic planning\, marketing\, and physician relations. He speaks frequently at national healthcare forums and also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota in the Master’s Program in Health Care Administration\, the University of St. Thomas and the College of St. Scholastica. He is a past president of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development and is active in National Healthcare Associations and corporate boards. Geoff received his undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College and his Masters from the University of Chicago. Geoff is currently the ACHE Regent for the State of Minnesota. In his spare time he enjoys playing and recording music (rock and roll)\, mountain climbing\, and most seasonal sports.\n \nPanel\nGreg Hanley\, CPHQ\, FACHE\, is the Director of Quality Management for UCare. Before joining UCare in 2013\, Greg was the Regional Quality Improvement Director for the Midwest for Coventry Health Care. Greg has experience in Health Plan Quality Management\, Delegation Oversight\, Health Plan Accreditation\, Provider Credentialing\, and Medicare Stars.\nGreg is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality. He serves on the board of the ACHE-MN Chapter as the Chair of the Education Committee. Greg received his undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University\, an MBA from Portland State University and a Masters in Theological Studies from Liberty University.\nPatrick J. Kelly\, Captain\, US Navy (retired) became the Director of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System on June 16\, 2013. Mr. Kelly received his BA degree in 1979 from Creighton University\, Omaha\, NE. He received a Master of Public Health Degree in 1982 from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. He was commissioned a Lieutenant (junior grade) in 1983.  \nFollowing graduation from Officer Indoctrination School\, he was assigned as the Medical Administrative Officer\, Branch Medical Clinic\, NAS Miramar\, San Diego\, CA. In August 1985 he transferred to Naval Dental Center\, Subic Bay\, Republic of the Philippines as Fiscal and Supply Officer. He was ordered to Naval Hospital Oak Harbor\, WA in 1987 and served as the Fiscal and Supply Officer until April 1990 when he transferred to the 3d Medical Battalion\, Okinawa\, Japan where he served as the Battalion Executive Officer. \nIn 1993 he matriculated at the Naval War College\, Newport\, RI\, receiving a Masters in Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. He then served with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs)\, Washington\, DC as a Senior Policy Analyst. He subsequently was Director for Administration\, Naval Hospital\, Pensacola\, FL from June 1997 – May 2000. \nHe served one year as the Senior Health Care Administration Assignment Officer\, Bureau of Navy Personnel\, Millington\, TN before reporting to Bremerton\, WA where he served as Executive Officer of the Naval Hospital and Commanding Officer of the Fleet Hospital. He was Commanding Officer of Fleet Hospital Eight\, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom\, Rota\, Spain from February – July 2003 and Naval Health Care New England from July 2004 – August 2005. He was then ordered to the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery\, Washington\, DC as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations from September 2005 – July 2007. He was the Chief of Staff\, Navy Medicine West from July 2007 – June 2011\, when he retired from the Navy. Prior to reporting to Minneapolis\, he served as the Director of the VA Health Care System from July 2011 – June 2013. Mr. Kelly is married and has two sons. \n \nPhillip Kibort\, MD\, MBA\, became vice president system advancement at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in 1996 and he became Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs in 2002. Dr. Kibort was a pediatric gastroenterologist at Minnesota Gastroenterology from 1982 to 1994. He has written and published on issues of management and quality in healthcare and teaches on medical quality to healthcare professionals at the University of St. Thomas in the Twin Cities.   He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives and a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Kibort has served on the boards of Ronald McDonald House Charities\, Way to Grow and now Memorial Blood Center.   He was President of Temple of Aaron from 2003-2005.

Tactics include a range of:\n\nSubspecialty program designs\nGeographical services expansions\nExpansive asset investment plans \nVarieties of partnership schemes\n\n \n What isn’t well understood is whether health systems are expanding clinical service lines economically or dis-economically. Health systems can and do “scale-up” clinical service lines dis-economically under the assumptions that geographical reach and market share expansions are always of required value.\n  \nLearning Objectives: \n \n\nProvide participants with a market perspective on clinical service line developments\nProvide a case example of a clinical service line expansion plan\, including related strategic\, operational\, financial management and capital investment complexities and options.\nDemonstrate a novel model for evaluating the returns performance for the” scaling-up” of complex clinical service line strategies; a model that won’t be found in conventional evaluation models and methods.\n\n \n Speaker Bio:\n \nDaniel K. Zismer\, Ph.D.\n \nDr. Zismer serves as Professor in the Division of Health Policy and Management\, School of Public Health\, University of Minnesota\, where he is Chair and Director of the Masters in Healthcare Administration and Executive Studies Programs. He also serves as The Wegmiller Professor in Healthcare Administration and as Adjunct Associate Professor\, Division of Medicine\, Medical School\, University of Minnesota. His areas of interest are the design\, strategy\, operations and financial performance of integrated health systems.\nPrior to joining the University of Minnesota\, Dr. Zismer focused a 20 year career in health care on provider-side mergers\, acquisitions and related integrated strategies. He served as the head of two national healthcare consulting firms (one he co-founded and sold) and headed operations of a large\, multi-state\, integrated health system.\nDr. Zismer serves as a frequent lecturer to the American College of Healthcare Executives\, American College of Physician Executives\, and is a board member and advisor to a private\, healthcare real estate development company. He has authored and co-authored in excess of 100 professional publications and was named by Minnesota Physician as one of the most influential healthcare leaders in Minnesota.\nSpeaker Bio:\n   David A. Schuh\, CPA\n \nPROFILE\nDavid Schuh is a principal at CliftonLarsonAllen LLP with 25 years of accounting and advisory experience.  David provides national leadership to the Health Care Group’s strategic financial and capital planning services.\nTECHNICAL EXPERTISE\nDavid has provided leadership and direction to organizations in the area of strategic financial and capital planning. He has completed numerous financial and capital allocation plans for organizations ranging from small rural hospitals to large multi-state health care systems. He also consults with a number of organizations on the design and maintenance of a formal\, ongoing capital allocation process. He has provided leadership to major financial projects including mergers of academic and community hospitals\, physician and faculty reimbursement and financial incentive programs. He has extensive experience in the financial integration and analysis of hospitals and hospital based clinic services. He has prepared numerous internal and external use feasibility studies to support facility financing and investment. He has also worked extensively with financial and operational analyses around new facility and clinical program development.\nEDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT\nDavid is a certified public accountant and a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants\, the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts\, and the Iowa Health Care Financial Management Association.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Magna Cum Laude) from Northern State University.\n

Now more than ever before\, healthcare must possess leaders that have the vision to create future models of healthcare delivery and the courage to lead this most important transformational change to optimize “health.” \nThis seminar will present new and proven strategies and processes that were shared by successful Minnesota hospital healthcare executives participating in the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing program. These strategies and processes were illuminated through a recent qualitative grounded theory study through doctoral research and revealed successful positioning and achievement of clinical\, financial\, and value-driven outcomes. She holds a Doctor of Health Administration from Central Michigan University\, a Master’s of Science of Health Administration from Columbus State University\, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Mankato State University.\n \nACHIEVING SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY IN A HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION:\n \nHealth care organizations not only address their community members’ clinical needs\, they also contribute to their quality of life and well-being. Organizations involved in social sustainability build their communities by bringing together multiple stakeholders to address societal needs that can increase the well-being and quality of life for current and future generations. Social sustainability can foster improved community relationships\, lower organization operating costs\, support highly engaged colleagues\, build stronger brand identity\, promote risk mitigation\, encourage innovation\, increase market share\, and foster community goodwill. \n \nThe purpose of this research was to examine social sustainability within the context of a health care system and introduce a theoretical model for testing organizational social sustainability behavior. A case study methodology was used. Thirty-seven senior leaders from twelve Mayo Clinic Health System sites were interviewed. Their practice sites were located in Iowa\, Minnesota and Wisconsin\, a territory with a 150 square mile radius and a total population of 2 million individuals. A codebook was built for performing content analysis; an independent third party was trained to use it and preceded to code the first six interviews (148 comments). There was an 87% agreement rate between the primary and secondary coder. \n \nThe analysis of interview data indicated that health care organizations provided societal contributions outside of their core business. Culture\, community building\, alignment\, engagement\, and quality of life were identified as drivers that led organizations to engage in social sustainability. Formal and informal evaluation criteria were used for determining community involvement\, and for assessing if a proposed initiative was a good fit. \n \nA theoretical model was proposed to describe organizational participation in social sustainability as either passive or managed. Mayo Clinic Health System fit several characteristics of managed involvement. Specifically\, leaders assessed involvement options by checking their alignment with the organization’s participation goals (drivers)\, mission\, vision and values. Opportunities to abort and cease involvement were present. Each site budgeted dollars to fund initiatives\, but not at the expense of funding clinical services. Where participation processes were formalized\, project accountability\, performance metrics\, and evaluation criteria were used. \n \nFurther research should be undertaken to validate the proposed decision-making model and the coding themes in randomly selected healthcare organizations and in settings that are not healthcare related. Most importantly\, methods need to be developed for measuring return on investment in social sustainability endeavors and for assessing their alignment with the organizational vision\, mission and values. \n \nThe findings suggest several courses for action for healthcare leaders: 1) utilize the Health Care Community Needs Assessment as a framework for developing social sustainability action plans; 2) establish social sustainability as a purposeful organization strategy; 3) encourage staff to match their interests with local activities and permit scheduled work hours for volunteering; 4) distribute site resources contingent upon achieving financial performance expectations; 5) develop a public affairs strategy for cataloguing and sharing social sustainability involvement information; and 6) use the proposed decision-making model to manage social sustainability involvement.   \n \nLearning Objectives: \n\n\nBetter understand social sustainability within the context of a healthcare system.\n\n\nObtain seve\n\n\n\n \n \nBio:\n \nStephen C. Located in Robbinsdale MN\, North Memorial is known for its Level I Trauma Center and emergency services\, cardiology\, oncology\, and women and children’s services as well as its primary and specialty care clinics. Dr. Cullinan joined North Memorial in 2014 to guide the system’s 14 primary care clinics\, 10 specialty care clinics which are positioned at 19 different sites\, as well as the Home and Community Services Division. \n \nDr. Cullinan has extensive experience in the areas of clinic operations\, provider relations\, quality management\, payer contracting and the development of a population strategy and implementation.  Prior to North Memorial\, he served in a similar role with the HealthEast Care System.  \n \nDr. Cullinan graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago\, College of Medicine.
