On Saturday, January 23rd, the Mayo Clinic Division of Hospital Internal Medicine in conjunction with the University of Minnesota School of Public Health MHA Program Alumni Association/Foundation and with the support of Minnesota Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives and Southeast Minnesota Local Program Council presented the 2017 the Harry Harwick Course on Healthcare Administration. The free course boasted 230 registrants.
Sessions featured Mayo Clinic medical and administrative leaders as well as faculty from the University of Minnesota MHA Program. After a rousing review of biases that affect leaders by Dr. Jamie Newman, Mary Jo Williamson, Chair of Practice Administration
talked about the role of teamwork in leadership in an evolving world and Cathy Fraser, Chief Human Resources Officer gave us a glimpse into the workforce of the future. Moving into the second session, Minnesota faculty members Dr. Timothy Beebee, Richard Priore and lecturer Justine Mishek gave us insight into Patient Reported Outcomes, financial management and innovative problem solving. The afternoon was policy focused with a National Update from Dr. Jean Abraham and a talk about mental health in Minnesota by Dr. Bruce Stutor. The day finished with a panel on leadership and career progression featuring early and developed careerists: Cyd Smith, Brenda Martin, Ann Meyers and Dr. John Knudsen.
